The Atlantic Ocean is the body of water between Africa, Europe and the Americas. In the south, it extends as far as Antarctica, where it borders the Southern Ocean. It is the second largest of the world's five oceans.   Its total area is about one-fifth of the earth's surface. It stretches in an S-shape from Iceland up to 58° south latitude for about 11,300 km.

Most of the most developed countries in the world lie on the shores of the North Atlantic. The Atlantic Ocean is thus interwoven with a network of the world's most widely used sea routes between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
