The Egyptian gods played a huge part! The people thought the pharaoh as to be the mortal form of the god Horus. They thought the pharaoh was there to lead and protect the people. They worshiped many gods, they were polytheistic, meaning there were a multitude of deities, who were believed to reside within and control the forces of nature.
