In Gibbons v. Ogden, the Supreme Court ruled that Gibbons’s federal license allowed him to operate in multiple states. Ogden’s license could not operate an interstate business. Ogden could not compete with Gibbons in interstate commerce. Gibbons and Ogden had to work together to operate in two states.
