From 16th Century European maritime forces started colonizing the New World, as they called. Latin America was mostly colonized by the countries from Iberian Peninsula - Spain and Portugal. Spain colonized most of the Latin America, with the exception of Brazil. That is why today people in Brazil are speaking Portuguese and people in Venezuela are speaking Spanish.

The first voyage to Americas, led by Christopher Columbus was started by the Spanish Crown. Therefore, all the territories who were conquered by Spanish conquistadores as they were called went directly to Spanish Crown. Portugal only managed to reach the shores of Brazil before them (Pedro Cabral) and therefore Brazil became Portuguese colony. Territory of Venezuela was conquered by Spaniards.
