Henry Clay is known as the Great Compromiser. On at least three separate occasions, Clay crafted a compromise between northern and southern states in Congress. Usually, the issue was slavery. One of Clay’s most important efforts was the Missouri Compromise of 1820.

Revisit the Missouri Compromise. Consider how the sectional issue of slavery contributed to the Civil War.

Do you think the Missouri Compromise was a good thing for the country in the end? Would the politics of 1861 have been better if the Missouri Compromise had not happened 40 years before? Explain your response.
