It is protected on the north by the Alps. These mountains provided a natural barrier to discourage invasions. The Apennine Mountains, which run north to south, divide the region into two different sections. The western side has rich fertile land; the eastern side is rocky and hilly. Because of the quality of land the people who lived on the eastern side were usually poor while the western coast had more wealth. The best harbors were located at the southern end on the western side. These harbors made it easy to trade with Spain, Gaul (France) and Great Britain.
