In my judgment, the election of no man, constitutionally chosen to that high office, is sufficient cause to justify any State to separate from the Union. –Alexander Stephens, Address to the Georgia legislature, 1860 What explanation does Stephens give to support his argument? Seceding from the Union is the only way to change the results of the election. Losing an election is not a strong enough reason to secede from the country. An unfair election can have long-term effects and should spark a secession. Any talk of secession should wait until all the votes in the election have been counted.
