Self Concept
Our self-concept is an image of ourselves as having an identity that’s separate from other
people. The people whose judgments are most important to our self-concept are called
significant others. These people are people that we usually want to impress, like friends, family,
teachers, coaches, or religious leaders.
a. How do you think these people judge you?
b. How do you know these people judge you in this way?
Looking-Glass Self
Describe a situation where you had an idea of how you appeared to others in a group. The
group could be family, friends, classmates, teammates, etc… After leaving the situation, you
imagined how you were judged. This could be positive or negative.
a. What was your initial idea of how people or an individual viewed you?
b. What happened during the interaction that lead you to believe you were judged in a
certain way?
c. How did the interaction impact you?
Anticipatory Socialization
Anticipatory socialization is the voluntary process of preparing to accept new norms, values, and
attitudes of a group. Think about a time that you entered a new team or group.
a. How did you prepare yourself to join the group?
b. How does a group get a new member to accept the norms of the group?
c. What happens to an individual who deviates from the group’s attitude, values or beliefs?
