Assimilation was one ideological basis of French colonial policy in the 19th and the 20th centuries. Unlike in the British Empire, the French Colonial Empire taught its subjects that by adopting French language and culture, they could eventually become French.

Basically assimilation means changing beliefs, behaviors, culture, language etc. to adapt to a new environment. France does this through secularism which means separation of religion from the state, religion has no place in ethics of the state and in no civil affairs.
