Why did Ferdinand Magellan explore

Magellan's expedition (1519-1522) was one of the most famous ones during the Age of Exploration. He continued what Columbus and other started and that is to find water route to Asia by sailing to the West. He managed to circle practically the whole Earth, although he died eventually during expedition, and his expedition is often regarded as a prove that the Earth is not flat.
