The sanctuary is home to a number of endangered animals including the gharial, rhino, tiger and Gangetic dolphin. Rafting and swimming is also possible in the Bheri River near the village of Bidhyapur (Surkhet District). In the region there are cultural resources close by like the Bageshawori Temple. There is also the heritage site called Kakre Bihar, the ruins of a Buddhist monastery. The climate in Surkhet for example is moderate with a temperature of 5°C  in the winter and as high at 38°C in the summer.
