How did physical characteristics of the environment influence the location of the settlement at Jamestown?

Jamestown was founded on a river bank which provided relatively easy access to the colonists. However, the area also had some geographical features that negatively impacted the colony.

The water for example was not suitable for drinking, and the colony was isolated from other areas. The land itself was a swamp, infested with mosquitoes, an enviroment ripe for disease.

Finally, at the time when the colonists arrived, the area was suffering from a severe and long drought, which resulted in very poor prospects of cultivation, both for the colonists and the Native Americans that inhabited the sorrounding territories.
