Read this excerpt from We’ve Got a Job: The 1963 Children’s March. As King finished speaking, a young white man named Roy James jumped onto the stage and attacked him with brass knuckles, slugging him in the back and jaw. Rather than return the blows or even cover his face, King dropped his hands by his side and looked at his assailant. Other ministers rushed to restrain James, but King stopped them. "Don't touch him," he cried. "We have to pray for him." King put his arm around the man who had been attacking him. They talked quietly. The man, a member of the American Nazi Party, started crying and admitted that he had come there to prove that King was not nonviolent. The minister did not even press charges. What does this characterization of Martin Luther King reveal? the depth of his knowledge the greatness of his speeches the dedication of his supporters the strength of his convictions

Martin Luther King was a man of peace, a devout follower of Jesus Christ, and a man who observed the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi who routinely preached nonviolence.  

Explanation: Dr. King was a man who not only spoke about non violence, he actually lived the words he spoke. To Dr. King, actions spoke much louder than the famous speeches he gave. His demeanor, his attitude and his being was one of peace, love and hope for his fellow man-regardless of race, creed, or color. He once remarked, "Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.”  Even after being brutally attacked, bloody but unbowed, he urged his supporters to not hurt the man who had physically hurt him , and placed his hands at his sides as his assailant approached. Rather than defend himself, Dr. King asked for his supporters to pray for the man, which they did. And the beating stopped. After being beaten, Dr. King went to a side room and spoke with the individual at length about the reasons for his attack, and then to take time to forgive his attacker, refusing to have Roy James jailed. How sad that such a man of peace ultimately lost his life to an act of hatred. In speaking about nonviolence Dr. King said, “We adopt the means of nonviolence because our end is a community at peace with itself. We will try to persuade with our words, but if our words fail, we will try to persuade with our acts." He did that for the remainder of his life. In his lifetime, using non-violence, Dr King and the civil rights movement began to “overcome,” although even today, some 52 years after his death, we still have a ways to go.
