Between 1983 to 2009 the Sri Lankan Civil War was a civil war waged in Sri Lanka's island region. The Independence Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who struggled to establish an autonomous Tamil country called Tamil Eelam in the northern and eastern parts of the island, started an irregular uprising against the government on 23 July 1983.
