In the later years of the Umayyad dynasty, the Caliphate managed to further gain power through expansion and warfare with the Byzantines. In 712 the  Umayyads were able to gain control of various areas in the Persian Gulf. They also gained control of points along the Indus river like the Sindh and Punjab regions.  It was Caliph Hisham (724 to 743) who was successful at further advancing the expansion of the Umayyad dynasty. He established bases in North Africa and then orchestrated raids on the Visigothic Kingdom. This eventually led to the occupation of Iberia (present-day Portugal and Spain) by the Umayyad.
