Name the purpose of the dendrite, cell body and axon

Neurons are nerve cells and they are the cells that make up the different parts of the nervous system. They pass on messages to and from the brain that controls how are body responds to different internal and external stimuli.

Neurons are made up of different parts like the dendrite, cell body, and the axon:

Dendrite:

This is the fibrous projections found at one end of the nerve cell. They are characterized by their branches that span out from the cell body. They function as the receivers of signals from other neurons, processes it and move it down to the cell body.

Cell body:

Like the name suggests, the cell body is the body of the cell that holds the other organelles that make up cells like the nucleus, mitochondria and the like. It is also known as the soma.

Axon:

The axon is a tail-like nerve fiber that carries messages away from the cell body and to other neurons and tissue muscles and glands. Axons of neurons can differ in length and longer ones usually are insulated by fatty cells called myelin sheaths.
