The Freedmen's Bureau was mainly established by the U.S congress in 1865 to cater for the welfare and needs of former slaves and indigent blacks and whites in the U.S. after the Civil war. The Bureau focused on providing basic needs which include food, free medical services, shelter, clothing, education, free legal services, etc. This program however also faced its own challenges which majorly include paucity of funds and human resources, as well as political interference.

The major achievements of the Bureau include: during the duration of its existence, it was able to provide food for its target audience
