Graded Assignment

Perspectives on Reconstruction

Total Score: of 30 points

For this project, use what you have learned about Reconstruction in South Carolina to evaluate and describe multiple points of view regarding its successes and failures.

In this assignment, you will

• Explain and demonstrate that the different experiences people went through during Reconstruction led them to have different perspectives about what it achieved.

• Explain and demonstrate how the societal values people held helped shape their perspectives about what Reconstruction accomplished.

• Explain and demonstrate how different cultural traditions also gave people different perspectives about Reconstruction.

• Summarize the successes and failures of Reconstruction in South Carolina when it came to creating new political, educational, or social opportunities for African Americans.

• Summarize how Reconstruction in South Carolina led to the rise of discriminatory groups.

• Summarize how the withdrawal of federal protection affected the legacy of Reconstruction as either a success or a failure.

This is a two-day project.

On day one, you will select three different identities. For this assignment, you will write one letter or diary entry for each of the three different identities you chose. Each submission should illustrate the perspectives, points of view, and biases of that person.

Choose three different identities from this list:

• An African American child

• A wealthy planter

• A Radical Republican

Use the notes in your History Journal, the information in your textbook, and, if necessary, details you find from online research. For each of the three identities you have chosen, attempt to answer these five questions:

1. How did this person view the reasons behind Reconstruction?

2. How did Reconstruction affect this person?

3. What goals did this person have during Reconstruction, and were those goals achieved?

4. How did this person feel when Reconstruction ended, and why?

5. How did the societal values and cultural traditions of the selected identities affect their perspectives about Reconstruction?

On day two, you will use the notes in your History Journal to complete this Graded Assignment worksheet and submit it to your teacher.
