Operating during the time of Prohibition and Jim Crow racial segregation laws, black people could not initially patronize the club but that didn't stop the club hiring them for performances. Legends like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Fletcher Henderson are known to have played at this club which drew many celebrities to its door.
