Imperialism in Africa
Hook: Throughout the lesson there was much discussion regarding how Africa was treated unfairly. This inequality can be best seen during the Berlin Conference in 1884; Africa had no say what-so-ever! Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, and Italy were some of the countries involved in the Berlin Conference deciding on how to separate Africa into equal parts for resources. The effect of the Berlin Conference led to African tribes
being separated and rival tribes bounded together. This led to violence and unrest that would last until the Great War and beyond.
Task: Pretend you are living in Africa during this time, your tribe, consisting of your family and friends have been taken from you and placed into another area where you cannot go. You are then forced to relocate to a tribe that is hostile towards your tribe. Create a two (2) paragraph journal entry (in a Word document) on how you feel regarding your tribe being taken away from
you, you being in a tense situation with a rival tribe, and knowing that the precious resources you used to use to trade with friendly tribes is being stripped away.
Next, change your perspective, pretend you are a European that has endured a dangerous voyage, lost friends due to disease during the voyage, and heard of the amazing possibility of gaining wealth by ceasing valuable resources in Africa. Create a two (2) paragraph journal entry (in a Word document) regarding how you feel concerning the loss of close friends, the tremendous voyage you embarked on, and the chance that you can return to Europe with precious resources that will gain you notoriety and wealth.
*Both paragraphs should include at least three (3) pieces of historically accurate information*

Athief was passing by a house under construction when he noticed that the ladder being used by workers on the roof had copper braces supporting the rungs. after making sure that the workers on the roof could not see him, the thief used pliers that he had in his pocket to remove all of the copper braces that he could reach from the ground. a short time later, a worker climbed down the ladder and it collapsed. he fell to the ground and severely injured his back. the thief was apprehended a few hours later trying to sell the copper for scrap. a statute in the jurisdiction makes it a felony for "maliciously causing serious physical injury to another." the thief was charged with malicious injury under the statute and was also charged with larceny. after a jury trial in which the above facts were presented, he was convicted of both charges. if he appeals the conviction for the malicious injury charge on grounds of insufficient evidence, how should the court rule? a affirm the conviction, because the thief was engaged in criminal conduct at the time of the act that resulted in the injury. b affirm the conviction, because the jury could have found that the thief acted with malice. c reverse the conviction, because there was no evidence that the thief intended to injure anyone. d reverse the conviction, because there was no evidence that the thief bore any malice towards the workers on the roof.
