This route was known to be the major connection between Arabia, India, Southeast Asia (particularly China), and India from as early as 300 BC. Merchants however dominated the network. Before the Indian Ocean was discovered by the Europeans, Gujarat and Arabia traders sailed using "triangle-sailed dhows" to help them control the monsoon winds.
