After the World War I, with the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was held responsible for starting the war and was imposed with payment of compensations in the form of tariffs and reparations to the victorious states.  

The shame of defeat shared by Germans was one of the reasons that gave rise to Nazism. In addition, during the interwar period, Communism have rapidly developed in the Soviet Union as response to centuries of the rule of monarchy and rise of working masses.
