At the it was voted to forbid sign language in schools and to only use speech and lipreading. despite the american delegates voting against it, many deaf schools in america forbade the use of sign language. deaf teachers were no longer allowed to teach because they were unable to with teaching the deaf students to lipread and speak. students who signed in class often were forced to wear mittens with short strings attaching them to each other so that they couldn't sign.
