At work, when I know that I am not gettign paid for a particular task, I am more likely to care little about it. The amount of care and work that I put into a task is usually dependent on the reward I will get for it.

If the grades in my class were going to be determined by a random drawing at the end of the course, it is likely I would not study as much. I would study a little, because I care about the knowledge I acquire, but my motivation would be much lower.

In the same way, if I knew that everyone in the class will receive an A at the end of the year, I would study much less. If the examinations were based entirely on examinations based in the end of the chapter questions in the textbook, then I would most likely only study that section.
