South africa gained its independence from britain in 1910. why did this not lead to freedom and equality in south africa !

I thought it was because Britain decided to withdraw from the government of south africa and gave it to the white residents of south africa. it was declared a republic and they adopted the second constitution which took away the rights of blacks.
