What were the benefits of using locomotives to transport people and goods over horse power

The Transport Revolution allowed goods, people and information to travel quickly throughout the country. While this revolution changed the way American products were made, it also brought changes in transportation that would cover most of the United States.

With the invention of the steamboat and steam trains, the transportation revolution created a boom in business throughout the country by reducing shipping time and costs. The invention of these two new forms of transport transformed the lives of those who used them to travel and send goods by allowing them to travel quickly and efficiently throughout the country.

Before the locomotive, the fastest way to travel by land was on horseback, an uncomfortable way of travelling that allowed to carry very little weight and that required frequent stops to rest. In contrast, steam trains travelled faster, were able to cover larger distances and could carry massive loads.
