In an Arab Muslim empire, like the Ummayyads -from 7th to 8th centuries-, Muslims were equals according to the Islamic law, but in fact, there were some differences between Arab and non-Arab Muslims since Arabs ruled the empire and saw themselves as first class citizens.

Jews and Christians -and people from other denominations- were called Dhimmis, which means they were protected under Islamic law but as non-Muslims, they faced some restrictions and paid higher taxes.

Slaves were at the bottom of the economic system since they were a property of their owners and used to do the hardest works.
