What was muhammads role in establishing and spreading islam

Muhammad was born on year 570 in Mecca.  After having dedicated himself to commerce and having founded a family, he began to have visions and revelations through which he came to the conviction that he had been chosen as a prophet by the only true God, Allah.

He began to preach the new faith, but he aroused strong opposition. For this reason, he decided to flee from Mecca and go to Medina. This flight, the hijra, begins the Mohammedan calendar and took place in the year 622 of the Christian era.

In Medina, Muhammad was able to impose himself as a religious and political leader. Then he began a holy war against his adversaries and was able to enter victoriously in Mecca (630), where the Kaaba was purged of its idols and became the central sanctuary of the new faith. When Muhammad died, two years later, his religion had already been imposed in most of Arabia.

The religion of Muhammad, Islam, that is, "submission to the will of Allah," is contained in the sacred book of the Muslims. It is formed by the teachings of Muhammad that he supposedly received from Allah.
