Elijah Muhammad (1897-1975) was a black religious leader who became the leader of the so-called Nation of Islam (NOI) between 1934 and 1975. He mentored other important personalities, known for their role in the movements for the rights of the black people, such as Malcom X,  Louis Farrakhan and Muhammad Ali.

The NOI was founded in Detroit and grew as a powerful political and religious movement which aimed to enhance the  spiritual, political, social, and economic conditions of African American people in the US, and, as an ultimate goal, of all of human beings.

Its leader, Elijah Muhammad, preached his own interpretation of Islam to his congregation. He claimed for restoring the hegemony of black people over whites, which had been stolen, as he considered the black race as the 'original' human being. His lessons attracted young disadvantaged Black Americans, who had previously turned their backs on religion (in fact, most of these young people came from Christian backgrounds and had almost never been in church).

In subsequent years, however, he tempered his anti-white tone and emphasized self-reliance among black people rather than a quarrel between races.  

Due to Muhammad's separatist perspectives, his most famous student, Malcolm X, severed ties with the group and, before his assassination in 1965, relieved lend identity to the group (formerly known as the American Muslim Mission and now part of orthodox Muslims throughout the world. ) which divided from the Nation of Islam after Muhammad's death in 1975. Another group, which maintained the name and principles of the original Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad, was founded under the leadership of Louis Farrakhan.
