In ancient Greece, four distinct social classes had been established:

1. The citizens. (Great tenants and aristocrats) They were the only landowners, since they could own land and devote themselves to the affairs of the polis (city). The best occupation of the citizen class was the political affairs of the city, a real vocational work for this social class.

2. Small farmers were people who only engaged in cultivation and did not participate in political life.

3. Metecos They called themselves foreigners living in Athens. They were free and could participate in ceremonies of all kinds, both civil and religious. They were mostly merchants, bankers and maritime merchants. However, they had no right to own land, except in exceptional cases, with a special permit.

4. The slaves. They were the pariahs of the time. They were on the last rung of the ladder. They were not free, but belonged to other people. They had no rights over their people, since their bodies belonged to their owners, so they were obliged to work for them. However, the owners did not have life or death rights over their slaves.
