Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein argued against the definition approach by proposing a theory of family resemblance. This philosophy and language theory says words are loosely defined by a combination of common, or related, features rather than a rigorous single feature.
Wittgenstein states that some words do not have a single essence that encompasses their definition.
