BUT, when you use it, you have to be careful with the signs.

V₀ is the initial speed of the toss.  That's the 49 m/s, and it's
positive, because the ball is tossed upwards.

The 'a' is the acceleration of gravity ... 9.8 m/s² ... and that's
negative, because gravity accelerates things downward.

So, to apply the formula properly, it would be

     D  =  (49 m/s) (5 sec) + (1/2) (-9.8 m/s²) (5 sec)²

          =       ( 245 m )      +      ( -4.9 m/s² ) (25 sec²)

          =       ( 245 m )       -      ( 122.5 m)

          =                  122.5 m
