Harvard Bridge, which connects MIT with its fraternities across the Charles River, has a length of 364.4 Smoots plus one ear. The units of one Smoot is based on the length of Oliver Reed Smoot, Jr., class of 1962, who was carried or dragged length by length across the bridge so that other pledge members of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity could mark off (with paint) 1-Smoot lengths along the bridge. The marks have been repainted biannually by fraternity pledges since the initial measurement, usually during times of traffic congestion so that the police could not easily interfere. (Presumably, the police were originally upset because a Smoot is not an SI base units, but these days they seem to have accepted the units.) The figure below shows three parallel paths, measured in Smoots (S), Willies (W), and Zeldas (Z).

When temperature of a substance increases, of its particles increase resulting in more between particles. real world applications of thermal expansion absolute zero (-273 degrees c) is the lowest possible temperature on the kelvin scale. it is a measure of where a substance has no kinetic energy. heat is a process of the . energy flows spontaneously from a object to a until equilibrium is reached. heat is measured in heat is transferred throughis a method of heat transfer that occurs between particles of matter that are in direct contact with each other. are poor conductors that impede / reduce the rate of heat transfer. is a method of heat transfer that occurs in fluids (non-solids) by means of currents. real world application of convectiona method of heat transfer through electromagnetic waves. when energy moves from one object to another inside a closed system, no energy is or in the system in the transaction. systems will spontaneously move to a state of organized energy or high disorder over time called

Estimate the kinetic energy of the neptune with respect to the sun as the sum of the terms, that due to its daily rotation about its axis, and that due to its yearly revolution about the sun. [assume the neptune is a uniform sphere with mass = 1.0×1026 kg , radius = 2.5×1010 m , rotation period 16.1 h , orbital period 6.01×104 d and is 4.6×109 km from the sun.]
