A nucleus whose mass is 3.680784 × 10−25 kg undergoes spontaneous "alpha" decay. The original nucleus disappears and there appear two new particles: a He-4 nucleus of mass 6.640678×10−27 kg (an "alpha particle" consisting of two protons and two neutrons) and a new nucleus of mass 3.614271 × 10−25 kg (note that the new nucleus has less mass than the original nucleus, and it has two fewer protons and two fewer neutrons).
(a) When the alpha particle has moved far away from the new nucleus (so the electric interactions are negligible), what is the combined kinetic energy of the alpha particle and new nucleus?
(b) How many electron volts is this?

Acommon technique in analysis of scientific data is normalization. the purpose of normalizing data is to eliminate irrelevant constants that can obscure the salient features of the data. the goal of this experiment is to test the hypothesis that the flux of light decreases as the square of the distance from the source. in this case, the absolute value of the voltage measured by the photometer is irrelevant; only the relative value conveys useful information. suppose that in part 2.2.2 of the experiment, students obtain a signal value of 162 mv at a distance of 4 cm and a value of 86 mv at a distance of 5.7 cm. normalize the students' data to the value obtained at 4 cm. (divide the signal value by 162.) then calculate the theoretically expected (normalized) value at 5.7 cm.

Aheavy boy and a lightweight girl are balanced on a massless seesaw. the boy moves backward, increasing his distance from the pivot point. what happens to the seesaw? it is impossible to predict without knowing additional information. the side the boy is sitting on will tilt downward. the side the girl is sitting on will tilt downward. nothing; the seesaw will remain balanced.
