A long spring with a spring constant of 75.0 N/m is sitting vertically with one end attached to the ground. A 10.0 kg block (block 1) sits at rest on top of the spring. A 4.00 kg block (block 2) is held at rest, 1.20 m above block 1 as it sits on top of the spring. Block 2 is released and lands on top of block one, sticking to it.
a) What is the compression of the spring with block 1 sitting on it?
b) How fast are the two blocks moving immediately after their collision? (hint: this is a collision… what is conserved in every collision?)

Moon effect. some people believe that the moon controls their activities. if the moon moves from being directly on the opposite side of earth from you to being directly overhead, by what percentage does (a) the moon's gravitational pull on you increase and (b) your weight (as measured on a scale) decrease? assume that the earth–moon (center-to-center) distance is 3.82 × 10^8 m, earth's radius is 6.37 × 10^6 m, moon's mass is 7.36 × 10^22 kg, and earth's mass is 5.98 × 10^24 kg.
