1. Lay the string on the floor or on a table and tie one end of the string to an unmoving object (ex. chair leg) or have
someone hold it still.
2. You manipulate the other end. Move it left and right to create a transverse wave flat on the surface you are using,
or, move it up and down to create a standing wave.
3. Change the amplitude (height) of the wave (make your arm motions larger). What seems to happen to
the frequency of the wave?
the wavelength of the wave?
the velocity (speed) of the wave?
4. Now hold your arm very stiff and create your waves. Observe.
5. Next, make your arm very floppy. How does the floppy vs. stiff arm wave differ?
Your arm (stiff or floppy) represents the medium (material the wave is
traveling through). The wave should travel faster when your arm is stiffer.
