Assignment: Too Much Stress Exploration Part 1: Under pressure, rocks may bend or break, resulting in some interesting landforms. Some rocks may crumble and fold. Other forces may raise folded rocks into mountains and highlands. Review what you’ve learned about folding and faulting by defining the following terms in thorough, complete sentences using your own words.

1. Fold

Folding is a geology action when sedimentary rock is squeezed from the sides by tectonic forces, it is likely to fracture, or become folded if it is warm enough to behave in a plastic manner.

2. joint

Joint, in geology is a brittle-fracture surface in rocks along which little or no displacement has occurred.

3. fault

A fault is a fracture in rock where there has been movement and displacement.

4. syncline

A trough of stratified rock in which the beds dip toward each other from either side

5. anticline

A fold with strata sloping downward on both sides from a common crest.

Part 2: Use the images on-screen to complete the activity and identify the forces involved in each image of stressed rock.

6. Forces used for folded rock near Palmdale, CA: compressional force

7. Forces used for the strike-slip fault in Iran: Strike slip faults

8. Forces used for the normal fault in British Columbia, Canada: Reverse

Forces used for the reverse fault in Shoshone, CA: compression stress force

Consider a one meter long horizontal pipe with a constant 100 cm^2 cross sectional area. water flows rightward into the pipe at x = 0 with flow velocity 02m/sec at every point within the pipe intake area. at x=1, the rightward flow rate is 0.192 m/sec. assume the water is a conserved quantity in the pipe, so there must be a leak (a sink) somewhere in the pipe. 1. compute net volumetric flow of the source if the system to be in equilibrium. 2. now assume the pipe in the problem has no leaks. compute the net volumetric rate of change for the system.

Electric field of the earth. the earth has a net electric charge that causes a field at points near its surface equal to 150 n> c and directed in toward the center of the earth. (a) what magnitude and sign of charge would a 60-kg human have to acquire to overcome his or her weight by the force exerted by the earth’s electric field? (b) what would be the force of repulsion between two people each with the charge calculated in part (a) and separated by a distance of 100 m? is use of the earth’s electric field a feasible means of flight? why or why not?

The base of a 50-meter tower is at the origin; the base of a 50-meter tree is at (0, 50, 0). the ground is flat and the z-axis points upward. the following parametric equations describe the motion of six projectiles each launched at time t = 0 in seconds. (i) r (t) = (50 + t2)k (ii) r (t) = 2t2 j + 2t2k (iii) r (t) = 50 i + 50 j + (50 − t2)k (iv) r (t) = 2t j + (50 − t2)k (v) r (t) = (50 − 2t) i + 2t j + (50 − t)k (vi) r (t) = t i + t j + tk (a) which projectile is launched from the top of the tower and goes downward? at time t = , the projectile hits the ground at point (x, y, z) = . (b) which projectile hits the top of the tree?
