You are on a team that is developing a game about people in outer space. You are using a computer program to create the sounds that will be used in the game. To make the sounds on your computer you have to change the characteristics of sound waves. Graph 1 shows a sound (one note) you are working on.

1. One way you can change the sound is to increase or decrease its frequency. Which of the graphs below shows how Graph 1 would change if you increased only the frequency of the wave? Graph .

The following graphs (Graph 1 and Graph 2) show two different graphs for the same note.

2. When the computer program plays the sound wave shown in Graph1, how do you think it will be different from sound made with Graph 2? Use evidence from the graphs and what you know about waves (wavelength, frequency, and amplitude) to support your claim.

One of the game developers claimed that it would not be possible for the characters to hear these sounds because there is no air in outer space. To explain, she first showed the model below of air particles vibrating when the computer plays the sound for a person on Earth. In this model, air particles are represented by gray dots. In the bands marked “A” the particles are vibrating closer together and in the bands marked “B" the particles are farther apart.

3. The graph below shows the relationship between air pressure and the distance that the vibrations traveled as the sound moved from the computer speaker to the person’s ear.

On the graph below:
● Write A on one place that represents how the sound vibrated the air particles in a band marked “A”.
● Write B on one place that represents how the sound vibrated the air particles in band marked “B”.
4. Explain why you think the parts of the graph that you labeled A and B represent the A and B bands on the model. Use what you know about the relationship between sound and air pressure to support your answer.
5. Explain why characters in the game would not be able to hear the sound when they are in outer space. Use what you know about waves and evidence from the Model of Sound or Graph of Sound on the previous page to support your explanation.

Fill in the blanks with the numbers is a measure of the resistance to flow. a high liquid has a high resistance to flow and flows slowly. the ancients thought everything in the world was made of 4 we now know that there are 94 naturally occurring and scientists have created another 24 i am certain they will create even more. honey flows slowly because it has a high to flowing. a can be separated by physical means because it contains more than one pure substance and 2 pure substances are not chemically bonded to each other. a cannot be separated by physical means. all matter is made up of all elements are with the same number of protons. if it is just a single or many bonded together, if all of them have the same number of protons, it is an element. in a piece of pure iron metal, all the are joined together, that piece of iron metal is called elemental iron. a single of iron is called elemental iron. a mixture has differences from place to place. we might need a microscope to see them or they might be obvious to the unaided eye. there are surfaces separating it into different phases. a mixture is the same everywhere. it is uniform. there are no surfaces separating it into different phases. if different kinds of atoms (different elements) are bonded together by their electrons, it is called a there are physical means of to isolate the different pure substances in a mixture and there are chemical means of to isolate the different elements in a compound. 1. element 2. compound 3. mixture 4. heterogeneous 5. homogeneous 6. pure substance 7. atoms 8. separation 9. viscosity 10. resistance
