Presently the plates are moving towards each other and will eventually merge into one landmass once again. Presently Africa I moving towards Europe and Asia and will merge with that landmass, closing the Mediterranean Sea. When plates move towards each other extensive fold mountain ranges will form; a modern day example is the Himalayan mountain range.
