mathematically it can be written as -

here k is the proportionality constant whose value is 1.

$f=\frac{dp}{dt}$

$f= \frac{d[mv]}{dt}$

$f=ma+v\frac{dm}{dt}$ [a is the acceleration=dv/dt]
