Imagine a piston containing a sample of ideal gas in thermal equilibrium with a large water bath. Assume that the piston head is perfectly free to move unless locked in place, and the walls of the piston readily allow the transfer of energy via heat unless wrapped in insulation. The piston head is unlocked and the gas is in an equilibrium state. For each of the actions described below, state whether the work W done on the gas, the heat energy Q transferred to the gas, and the change in the internal energy ΔEth of the gas are positive (+), negative (-), or zero (0). After each action the piston is reset to its initial equilibrium state. Throughout this item we will assume that the first law of thermodynamics is given by ΔEth=W+Q

Required:
Lock the piston head in place. Hold the piston above a very hot flame. Write down the signs of W, Q, and ΔEth Use +, -, or 0 separated by commas. For example, if Wis positive, Q is negative, and ΔEth is zero, you would type +,-,0.

As part of an industrial process, air as an ideal gas at 10 bar, 400k expands at steady state through a valve to a pressure of 4 bar. the mass flow rate of air is 0.5 kg/s. the air then passes through a heat exchanger where it is cooled to a temperature of 295k with negligible change in pressure. the valve can be modeled as a throttling process, and kinetic and potential energy effects can be neglected. (a) for a control volume enclosing the valve and heat exchanger and enough of the local surroundings that the heat transfer occurs at the ambient temperature of 295 k, determine the rate of entropy production, in kw/k. (b) if the expansion valve were replaced by an adiabatic turbine operating isentropically, what would be the entropy production? compare the results of parts (a) and (b) and discuss.

Abag of potato chips contains 2.00 l of air when it is sealed at sea level at a pressure of 1.00 atm and a temperature of 20.0 deg c. what will be the volume of the air in the bag if you take it with you, still sealed, to the mountains where the temperature is 7.00 deg c and atmospheric pressure is 70.0 kpa? assume that the bag behaves like a balloon and that the air in the bag is in thermal equilibrium with the outside air.
