Atwood’s machine consisted of two masses connected by a string that passes over a pulley, as shown below. The hanging mass m2 accelerates in the downwards direction. I also apply a small opposing upwards force F = 1⁄4 m2g on the bottom on the mass m2 but the mass m2 continues to accelerate in the downwards direction. (a) Find the Tension of the masses in terms of m1 and m2. (b) Calculate the numerical value of the Tension if m1 = 3.1 kg and m2 = 5.4 kg.
