How does brainwashing differ from other attitude change methods?

Brainwashing seems to differ from other attitude change methods bc (atleast I think of it as) someone not having the control themselves to change their perspective. Other attitude change methods usually involve that person making a choice to change or understanding why they should change but brainwashing the person does not have that control for themselves.
