A stone is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 29.0 m/s and when it reaches a height of 13 m, the velocity is 24.2 m/s. Using the formula x = v0 • t + ½ • a • t2, find the time it takes to reach this height? Why do you get two values for time? Explain.

Air is contained in a variable-load piston-cylinder device equipped with a paddle wheel. initially, air is at 400 kpa and 17°c. the paddle wheel is now turned by an external electric motor until 75 kj/kg of work has been transferred to air. during this process, heat is transferred to maintain a constant air temperature while allowing the gas volume to triple. calculate the required amount of heat transfer in kj/kg.

At a certain instant after jumping from the airplane a, a skydiver b is in the position shown and has reached a terminal (constant) speed vb = 52 m/s. the airplane has the same constant speed va = 52 m/s, and after a period of level flight is just beginning to follow the circular path shown of radius ρa = 2330 m. (a) determine the velocity and acceleration of the airplane relative to the skydiver. (b) determine the time rate of change of the speed vr of the airplane and the radius of curvature ρr of its path, both as observed by the nonrotating skydiver.
