A solid cylinder is mounted above the ground with its axis of rotation oriented horizontally. A rope is wound around the cylinder and its free end is attached to a block of mass 86.0 kg that rests on a platform. The cylinder has a mass of 265 kg and a radius of 0.430 m. Assume that the cylinder can rotate about its axis without any friction and the rope is of negligible mass. The platform is suddenly removed from under the block. The block falls down toward the ground and as it does so, it causes the rope to unwind and the cylinder to rotate.
(a) What is the angular acceleration of the cylinder?(rad/s²)
(b) How many revolutions does the cylinder make in 5 s? (rev)
(c) How much of the rope unwinds in this time interval? (m)

Simon is writing a story about an astronaut whose spacecraft has been boarded by space pirates. the astronaut has her lucky penny in her hand behind her back as the space pirates break into the control room. she has just locked the controls so that the ship is accelerating in the direction of the control room’s ceiling. simon wants the astronaut to use the penny to hit a button on the control panel to turn off the lights and escape. the button is located a short distance behind and below the astronaut’s hands. how should simon use the theory of relativity to describe what the astronaut must do in order to hit the button?
