You are assigned to do some calculations for a movie stunt that involves a car on a straight road. The road, pictured
above, has a hill that rises 8.0 m above the flat region. The top of the hill is a circular arc of radius 20 m. You need to
determine whether a car traveling under certain conditions will lose contact with the road at the top of the hill. There is
a stop sign 50 m from the beginning of the hill. You are to assume that a car of mass 1600 kg accelerates uniformly from
rest at the stop sign, has a speed of when it reaches the beginning of the hill, and then coasts with the engine off.
Assume energy losses due to friction and air resistance are negligible.
a) Calculate the magnitude of the acceleration of the car during the first 50 m.

Asheet of steel 1.5 mm thick has nitrogen atmospheres on both sides at 1200oc and is permitted to achieve a steady-state diffusion condition. the diffusion coefficient for nitrogen in steel at this temperature is 6 x 10- 11 m2 /s, and the diffusion flux is found to be 1.2 x 10-7 kg/m2 -s. also, it is known that the concentration of nitrogen in the steel at the high-pressure surface is 4 kg/m3 . how far into the sheet from this high-pressure side will the concentration be 2.0 kg/m3 ? assume a linear concentration profile.

As part of your daily workout, you lie on your back and push with your feet against a platform attached to two stiff springs arranged side by side so that they are parallel to each other. when you push the platform, you compress the springs. you do an amount of work of 79.0 j when you compress the springs a distance of 0.230 m from their uncompressed length. (a) what magnitude of force must you apply to hold the platform in this position? (b)how much additional work must you do to move the platform a distance 0.230 m farther? (c) what maximum force must you apply to move the platform a distance 0.230 m farther?
