Singly ionized (one electron removed) atoms are accelerated and then passed through a velocity selector consisting of perpendicular electric and magnetic fields. The electric field is 169 V/m and the magnetic field is 3.12×10⁻² T . The ions next enter a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 1.77×10⁻² T that is oriented perpendicular to their velocity.
(a) How fast are the ions moving when they emerge from the velocity selector?
(b) If the radius of the path of the ions in the second magnetic field is 17.5 cm, what is their mass?

An important dimensionless parameter concerned with very high-speed flow is the mach number, defined as v/c, where v is the speed of the object such as an airplane or projectile, and c is the speed of sound in the fluid surrounding the object. for a projectile traveling at 1170 mph through air at 50 ˚f and standard atmospheric pressure, what is the value of the mach number?

People with normal vision cannot focus their eyes underwater if they aren't wearing a face mask or goggles and there is water in contact with their eyes. in a simplified model of the human eye, the aqueous and vitreous humors and the lens all have a refractive index of 1.40, and all the refraction occurs at the cornea, whose vertex is 2.60 cm from the retina.with the simplified model of the eye, what corrective lens (specified by focal length as measured in air) would be needed to enable a person underwater to focus an infinitely distant object? (be careful-the focal length of a lens underwater is not the same as in air! assume that the corrective lens has a refractive index of 1.62 and that the lens is used in eyeglasses, not goggles, so there is water on both sides of the lens. assume that the eyeglasses are 2.05cm in front of the eye.)
