The above neglects a very important fact about such black hole collisions: the gravitational waves actually carry mass away from the system as well as simply momentum. Suppose that for the same collision described above the amount of mass carried away by the gravitational waves is about 3% of the total initial mass of the system. Recalculate the resulting amount of momentum carried away by the gravitational waves assuming that all the other given details stay the same.

One day, after pulling down your window shade, you notice that sunlight is passing through a pinhole in the shade and making a small patch of light on the far wall. you see that the patch of light seems to be a circular diffraction pattern. it appears that the central maximum is about 1 cm across and you estimate that the distance from the window shade to the wall is about 3 m. what is (a) the average wavelength of sunlight? (b) the diameter of the pinhole?

Global warming will produce rising sea levels partly due to melting ice caps but also due to the expansion of water as average ocean temperatures rise. to get some idea of the size of this effect, calculate the change in length (in m) of a column of water 1.45 km high for a temperature increase of 1.12°c. assume the column is not free to expand sideways. as a model of the ocean, that is a reasonable approximation, as only parts of the ocean very close to
