As demonstrated in lecture, a Van de Graaff generator (VGG) is a machine that can separate charges on two different conductive spheres. It used a belt to transport electrons off of a large, conductive sphere. The electrons were moved to a different conductive sphere, creating a large potential difference between the two spheres. In other words, it is an electrostatic generator. If a person holds onto the large sphere while the VGG is active, s / he will lose electrons at the same rate as the sphere, until connection is broken. If a conductive metal disk is connected to an active VGG, the disk will lose electrons at the same rate as the sphere. A 60 kg person is standing on a thin, conductive disk (the person is wearing thick rubber shoes, so the person is electrically separate from the conductive disk). The disk is connected to a VGG and the person places a hand on an identical, but separate VGG. If each of the VGG are activated (turned on) at the same instant and both remove electrons at a rate 500 determine: a. The amount of time the person would have to hold onto the VGG to float 1 mm above the conductive disk. b. The amount of mass that the person will gnin or lose during this time. Did the person gain or lose this mass?
