Once the hydrogen in the core of a star is gone, nuclear processes producing outward pressure can no longer counteract the force of gravity and the outer layers then collapse inward toward the core. This increase in core density temporarily favors the fusion of Hydrogen in the outer shell, which pushes the outer layers of the star outward to create a star.
